GCSE Science Exam Technique — What Actually Earns Marks
Content is only half the game. Here's the specific exam technique that separates students who know the material from students whose marks reflect it.
Decode the command words first
Every Science exam question opens with a command word, and each has a specific meaning tied to the mark scheme:
- State / Give / Name: one-word or one-line answer. No explanation needed.
- Describe: say what happens, in order, with detail.
- Explain: describe AND give the reason why.
- Compare: state similarities AND differences (both, or lose half the marks).
- Suggest: apply knowledge to a new context. Multiple valid answers.
- Evaluate: pros, cons, and a judgement.
- Calculate: show working AND state the answer with units.
Ignoring the command word is the single most common technique error. "Explain" answered with a description loses half the marks — even if the description is correct.
The 6-mark answer structure
6-mark questions are marked against a specific set of assessment points, not by prose quality. The technique:
- Read the question. Underline the command word.
- Brain-dump 6-8 relevant scientific points on scrap.
- Order them logically.
- Write them as bullet points or short sentences.
- Every point should be a distinct scientific fact — not a repeat.
A 6-mark answer of 5 short bullets earns more than 300 words of flowing prose that repeats the same 3 ideas.
Show units, always
"20" scores nothing. "20 m/s" scores full marks. Units are worth a mark on almost every calculation question. Circle the required unit in the question before you start.
Significant figures matter
"Give your answer to 3 significant figures" isn't decorative. Wrong sig figs = lost mark, even with the correct numerical value.
The graph question checklist
When asked to draw a graph: axes labelled with quantity AND unit, sensible scale, points plotted with small crosses, line of best fit (curved or straight — read the data). Missing any of these = lost marks even with correct plotting.
Timing
~1 minute per mark, with 5-10 minutes spare at the end for review. If a 4-mark question has eaten 8 minutes, move on — you'll lose more marks on later questions by lingering.
The application question trap
The last question or two on each paper often describes an unfamiliar scenario — a new plant, a novel material, a new experiment. Students panic because "we didn't cover this in class." The mark scheme wants known principles applied to a new context. Recognise the pattern, translate the scenario into familiar terms, and apply what you already know.
The mistake pattern that costs Grade 6 students Grade 7
Answering only half the question. "Compare and evaluate" needs both. "Describe and explain" needs both. Read every question through the lens of "how many things is it actually asking?" — then answer all of them.
