Grade 3 to Grade 9 in GCSE Maths
The Starting Point — Autumn 2024
J. came to us in Year 11 working at a Grade 3 in GCSE Maths, Edexcel. Like a lot of students at that stage, the problem wasn't a lack of effort — he was revising, just not effectively. His own words describe it well: it felt like something was "missing" from how exams and revision were connecting for him.
Our diagnostic assessment identified four specific weak areas dragging his marks down: algebra, ratios, shapes & angles, and probability. These weren't small gaps — together they accounted for a significant share of the marks available on both papers.
The Programme
Rather than a generic run-through of the whole GCSE Maths specification, we built J.'s sessions specifically around those four topics — rebuilding the underlying concepts first, then consolidating with real exam paper questions on exactly those areas, week after week. Progress was tracked weekly, not just reviewed at the end of term.
Alongside the content work, we walked through exam technique step by step — how to read a question properly, how to structure a working-out answer to pick up method marks even when the final answer isn't quite right, and how to manage time across a paper under real exam conditions.
The Result
By GCSE results day 2025, J. achieved a Grade 9 — a six-grade improvement from where he started less than a year earlier.
