How to Improve GCSE Maths from Grade 4 to Grade 7 in One Year

Three grades is a big jump — but entirely achievable for a committed student with a structured plan. Here's what that plan looks like.

What "Grade 4 to Grade 7" actually means in marks

On AQA Higher tier, Grade 4 is roughly 50/240 marks (~21%). Grade 7 is roughly 135/240 marks (~56%). You need to move from a 1-in-5 hit rate to a better-than-half hit rate — an 85-mark improvement across three papers, or 28 more marks per paper.

That sounds huge. It's actually the size of two topic areas being locked in.

The strategic insight

A student stuck at Grade 4 usually isn't stuck evenly. They're solid on 40% of topics and lost on the rest. Moving to Grade 7 doesn't require becoming solid on everything — it requires moving from 40% coverage to 70% coverage. The remaining 30% (Grade 8-9 territory) can stay untouched.

Focus on the wrong 30% and you'll spend a year and stay at Grade 4. Focus on the right 30% and Grade 7 arrives.

The four topic areas that carry a Grade 4 → 7 jump

1. Algebra (30% of Higher marks)

By far the biggest lever. Expanding double brackets, factorising quadratics, solving simultaneous equations, rearranging formulae, straight-line graphs, quadratic graphs. A student solid on all of these picks up 25-30 marks reliably.

2. Ratio and proportion

Direct and inverse proportion, compound measures, percentage change, ratio problems. 15-20 accessible marks that stuck-at-Grade-4 students often skip because they misread the question.

3. Pythagoras and trigonometry

Basic SOHCAHTOA, Pythagoras' theorem in 2D. Not the sine/cosine rule — that's Grade 8+ territory. Focus on the basics. 10-15 marks.

4. Standard number topics done right

Percentages, fractions, decimals, indices, standard form, HCF/LCM. These appear on both calculator and non-calculator papers. Getting them right consistently is 20+ marks.

What NOT to spend time on for this jump

Circle theorems, vectors, algebraic fractions, iteration, functions, sine/cosine rule, quadratic completion. These are Grade 8-9 discriminators. A Grade 4 → 7 student should attempt them only if there's time at the end of the paper — not spend weeks trying to master them.

The 10-month plan

  1. Sept-Oct: Diagnostic + algebra foundations (weeks 1-6)
  2. Nov-Dec: Ratio, proportion, percentages (weeks 7-12)
  3. Jan: January mocks + review
  4. Feb-Mar: Pythagoras/trig + non-calculator drilling
  5. Apr: Full past papers weekly, gap patching
  6. May: Peak week + technique work

The commitment required

Honest answer: 3-4 focused hours per week of maths. Weekly tutoring (or equivalent structure). No skipping the practice questions. Sitting real past papers. Marking honestly. A student who does the first three weeks and then drifts won't get to Grade 7. A student who does all 30 weeks almost certainly will.

Where families get this wrong

They target the wrong topics (trying to master Grade 8 material before securing Grade 6 material). They revise reactively rather than to a plan. They don't sit enough past papers. And they leave it until March, then wonder why 8 weeks isn't enough. Start in September and Grade 7 is realistic. Start in March and Grade 5-6 is the honest target.
