Why Is My Child Stuck on the Same GCSE Maths Grade?

Every mock comes back the same grade — sometimes a fraction better, sometimes worse. Here are the four reasons this happens and the specific fix for each.

Reason 1: A single unfixed content gap is capping the grade

Most maths grades plateau because a specific topic — often algebra manipulation, or ratio and proportion — is consistently costing 10-15 marks per paper. Fix that one topic and the grade jumps. This is the most common cause and, ironically, the easiest fix — usually 3-5 focused sessions.

Diagnostic: look at the last two mock papers side by side. Are the same topic questions being dropped both times? If yes, that's your target.

Reason 2: Revision is bulk, not targeted

Your child is working hard — 5 hours a week of revision — but working on the wrong things. They're re-reading topics they already understand and avoiding the topics they don't. Grades stay flat because the actual weak areas never get attacked.

Diagnostic: ask your child which specific topics they've drilled in the last two weeks. If the answer is vague ("just revising generally"), this is the problem.

Reason 3: Exam technique isn't developing

Your child's knowledge is fine but the marks don't reflect it. They rush the calculator paper, panic on the non-calculator, don't show working, or skip questions they could have got. Content-improvement alone won't fix a technique problem.

Diagnostic: at the end of a mock, ask "which questions did you not attempt, and why?" If the answer is "I ran out of time" or "I didn't understand the wording" — this is technique, not content.

Reason 4: They're at the ceiling of their current tier

A Foundation-tier student capped at Grade 5 will hit Grade 5 and stop. No amount of revision moves them past it. If your child is consistently scoring 90%+ on Foundation mocks, they've hit the ceiling — and they belong on Higher tier.

Diagnostic: what tier are they entered for, and what's their consistent mock percentage? 85%+ on Foundation = tier problem.

What none of this is

It's rarely "not working hard enough." Every parent's first instinct when a grade plateaus is to demand more revision. This almost never works — because the cause isn't quantity, it's quality of focus. More hours doing the wrong things creates a frustrated, exhausted student and no grade improvement.

The 30-minute conversation

Before booking a tutor, spend 30 minutes with your child and two recent mock papers. Categorise every dropped mark: content gap, technique error, or careless mistake. The pattern will usually be obvious after 15 marks. Then you know which of the 4 causes above you're dealing with — and the fix follows.
